Draft EPA report: Biofuels threaten habitat, water quality

Posted on January 28, 2011 by Donald Ferguson

A draft Environmental Protection Agency report has unmasked one of the nation’s biggest polluters…

…the “green fuel” industry.

“Growing biofuel crops can affect water quality through erosion and fertilizer runoff, among other factors,” The Hill reports this morning.

“Elsewhere, the report addresses effects on wildlife and habitat. “Increased cultivation of feedstocks for biofuel could significantly affect biodiversity through habitat alteration when uncultivated land is put into production,” it states, also noting risks of plant and animal exposure to pesticides, nutrient runoff into waters and other effects,” The Hill reports.

“This will result in land use change and effects on air quality, water quality, and biodiversity. Direct and indirect land use changes will likely occur across the globe as the U.S. and other biofuel feedstock-producing countries alter their agricultural sectors to allow for greater biofuel production. Many locations where biofuel production is growing, such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brazil, are also areas of high biodiversity value. Depending where biofuel feedstock production occurs, and to what extent the level of production increases with time, impacts to biodiversity could be significant.”

While coal and oil are extracted through simple mining or drilling (which why the Audubon Society allows oil drilling in its refuges,) the production of biofuels requires vast amounts of farmland to be clear-cut of trees, tilled and cultivated, irrigated with millions of gallons of water and sprayed with pesticides.

Both still need to be refined.

And so-called “green fuels” are just as polluting when consumed.

Not to mention many “green fuels” cannot be transported through non-pollution emitting pipelines, and must be shipped using tanker trucks.

In the end, many so-called “green fuels” are even dirtier than coal and oil.

Even worse, by eating up vast amounts of water and farmland, and even the crops themselves, “green fuels” are sending the price of food skyrocketing.

The result?  Widespread starvation, increasing poverty and food riots.

Dirtier air?  Dirtier water?  Increased human suffering?

It’s a good thing environmentalists have overblown the threat farming poses to the environment, or else they’d have to turn themselves in to the Green Police for “eco-crimes.”

Who will save the Earth…from environmentalists?

Gingrich: Save the EPA! Just give it a new name.

Posted on January 27, 2011 by Donald Ferguson

Presumptive presidential candidate Newt Gingrich wooed Republican voters in Iowa this week…

…by calling for the creation of a new federal bureaucracy, the “Environmental Solutions Agency.”

Gingrich, author of “A Contract With The Earth” says his new big ESA would replace the EPA.  The ESA would have exactly the same goals and powers as the EPA.

In reality, the only thing that changes is the letterhead.

Giving the EPA a prettier name, and having it rubber-stamped by a Republican, is widely seen as a insider move to protect the agency and radical Administrator Lisa Jackson at a time when many Americans are growing angrier over its rogue attacks on employers.

According to Gingrich, the creation of a new federal agency to control employers and consumer choices is a better way to reduce red tape and regulatory control by advocates.

Gingrich did not explain how exactly replacing a federal bureaucracy controlled by environmental radicals with a new federal bureaucracy that will be controlled by environmental radicals reduces red tape.

One might wonder why Gingrich refuses to call for the abolition of the EPA, and why he believes federal bureaucrats should be controlling employers and consumers in the name of a radical agenda.

It might be Big Green statements like this ad, in which ousted Speaker Gingrich curled up next to then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi on a love seat, demanding the government take control to stop “climate change.”

Gingrich declined to run for president in 2008 to pursue what he saw as a more important calling — pushing his “Contract With The Earth.”

Gingrinch calls on government to use their tax codes to push companies into adopting Big Green initiatives, and to redistribute billions of tax dollars to scientists and engineers who agree to develop “green technologies.”

It makes one wonder if Al Gore is going to sue him for plagarism.

Gingrich’s ESA is NOT an attempt to reduce federal control over consumers.  It’s just an attempt to make green radicalism prettier and more palatable.

‘Settled science?’ RFK, Jr. in 2008: D.C. may never see snow again

Posted on January 26, 2011 by Donald Ferguson

As Washington, D.C has been completely immobilized by a snowstorm, now is a good time to remember that in Sept. 2008, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. penned a hysterical column for the Los Angeles Times predicting the ravages of so-called “man-made global warming” would mean Washington, D.C. may never see snow again.

An embarassed Kennedy has since scrubbed the column from his website, but nothing escapes the scrutinous eye of the wonderful David Freddoso at The Washington Examiner, who republished the core of Kennedy’s alarmist pap when D.C. was snowed under last February.

“In Virginia, the weather also has changed dramatically. Recently arrived residents in the northern suburbs, accustomed to today’s anemic winters, might find it astonishing to learn that there were once ski runs on Ballantrae Hill in McLean, with a rope tow and local ski club. Snow is so scarce today that most Virginia children probably don’t own a sled. But neighbors came to our home at Hickory Hill nearly every winter weekend to ride saucers and Flexible Flyers.

“In those days, I recall my uncle, President Kennedy, standing erect as he rode a toboggan in his top coat, never faltering until he slid into the boxwood at the bottom of the hill. Once, my father, Atty. Gen. Robert Kennedy, brought a delegation of visiting Eskimos home from the Justice Department for lunch at our house. They spent the afternoon building a great igloo in the deep snow in our backyard. My brothers and sisters played in the structure for several weeks before it began to melt. On weekend afternoons, we commonly joined hundreds of Georgetown residents for ice skating on Washington’s C&O Canal, which these days rarely freezes enough to safely skate.

“Meanwhile, Exxon Mobil and its carbon cronies continue to pour money into think tanks whose purpose is to deceive the American public into believing that global warming is a fantasy.”

An angry Kennedy snapped back, “Idiots on the right like Rush like to point to any cold-weather anomalies as proof that global warming doesn’t exist.”

But wouldn’t he be an “idiot” for pointing to any warm-weather anomaly as proof that global warming does exist?

If “man-made global warming” is ”settled science,” why can’t its leading experts agree on what the climate will be just 15 months from now?

State of the Union: American Tradition Partnership debunks Obama’s green claims
“Americans want Congress to deliver a ‘shellacking’ to Obama’s job-killing green agenda”

WASHINGTON — American Tradition Partnership Executive Director Donald Ferguson released the following statement and fact sheet Tuesday night debunking false claims made by President Barack Obama about his environmentalist policies in his annual “State of the Union” address.

“Americans sent Obama a message in November – stop spending and get government out of the way.  He did not hear you.  His address Tuesday night was a tone deaf performance orchestrated by Big Green.

“Families are struggling with joblessness and rising prices, but Barack Obama chose to side with the radical green activists who are driving up costs and driving out jobs.  Obama coldly ignored families and instead warmly embraced the radical green activists responsible for fewer jobs and higher prices.  In November they demanded Washington cut off the special interest cash spigot.  Instead Obama demanded Congress shower his Big Green allies with billions in new spending.  Obama’s green agenda is a red light stopping economic growth.

“Obama’s demand that 80 percent of the nation’s power come from expensive, inefficient experimental sources is a prescription for disaster.  Time and time again, Expensive Energy Mandates have always proven to jack up utility bills and kill jobs.

“Americans want Congress to deliver a ‘shellacking’ to Obama’s job-killing green agenda.  His proposal for billions in new spending is just a rehash of his failed ‘stimulus’ boondoggle that poured mountains of cash into failed ‘green’ experiment.  Defending federal bureaucrats like the EPA and wasting billions on green experiments are precisely what Americans rejected in November.

“Obama openly admitted his ‘green energy’ spending plan will cause your utility bill to, in his own words ‘skyrocket.’ His ‘green jobs’ spending spree proposal has been proven time and time again to be a jobs-destroying black hole.  His plan to supposedly cut red tape includes massive loopholes allowing bureaucrats to exempt virtually every expensive regulation and he continues to defend the EPA’s plans to chase jobs overseas.  People wanted to hear what he would do to get government out of the way of economic recovery.  They were instead pounded with repeated calls for the same government waste, meddling and explosive spending that got us into this mess.”

Obama’s quotes are taken from an advance copy of the speech released by the White House.

Founded in 2007 as Western Tradition Partnership and launched nationwide in 2011 as ATP, the group is supported by grassroots members from across the nation. ATP is a fast-growing non-profit organization dedicated to fighting environmental extremism and promoting private property and responsible development and management of land, water, and natural resources.

OBAMA’S GREEN FICTION: “We’ll invest in…clean energy technology – an investment that will strengthen our security, protect our planet, and create countless new jobs for our people… I challenge you to join me in setting a new goal: by 2035, 80% of America’s electricity will come from clean energy sources.”

ATP’S FACTS: So-called “renewable power” is inefficient, hideously expensive and destroys jobs.

(George Will, The Washington Post, ‘Tilting at green windmills,’ June 25, 2009)
“(Gabriel) Calzada, 36, an economics professor at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, has produced a report that, if true, is inconvenient for the Obama administration’s green agenda, and for some budget assumptions that are dependent upon it.
“Calzada says Spain’s torrential spending — no other nation has so aggressively supported production of electricity from renewable sources — on wind farms and other forms of alternative energy has indeed created jobs. But Calzada’s report concludes that they often are temporary and have received $752,000 to $800,000 each in subsidies — wind industry jobs cost even more, $1.4 million each. And each new job entails the loss of 2.2 other jobs that are either lost or not created in other industries because of the political allocation — sub-optimum in terms of economic efficiency — of capital.  (European media regularly report “eco-corruption” leaving a “footprint of sleaze” — gaming the subsidy systems, profiteering from land sales for wind farms, etc.) Calzada says the creation of jobs in alternative energy has subtracted about 110,000 jobs elsewhere in Spain’s economy.”

A deal for a $900 million “wind farm” in Iberdrola, California  was struck down by an administrative law judge who ruled “the Manzana Wind Project is not cost-competitive and poses unacceptable risks to ratepayers”  and “it will subject the ratepayers to unacceptable risks due to potential cost increases resulting from project under-performance, less than forecasted project life, and any delays which might occur concerning transmission upgrades and commercial online date.”

The Manzana debacle is just one of many that plague the expensive, inefficient “wind energy” lobby.

A solar power company went belly-up even after Massachusetts taxpayers showered it in $58 million in subsidies, and officials gave it a sweetheart $1 a year lease.

“Evergreen Solar Inc., once a poster-company for Gov. Deval Patrick’s green-jobs agenda, announced plans on Tuesday to shutter its Devens manufacturing plant and move more than 800 jobs elsewhere after accepting $58 million in state subsidies to expand in Massachusetts…

“…The company accepted $58.6 million in grants, loans, land, and tax incentives over the last few years as incentive to expand in Massachusetts and add at least 350 new jobs to the economy.”

Massachusetts is just the latest state to discover “solar” power is expensive, inefficient and a jobs killer.

American Tradition Institute, a sister organization of American Tradition Partnership, recently completed an economic study of the costs of Montana’s Expensive Energy Mandate, forcing utilities to buy power from the politically-connected wind and solar lobby.  ATI finds:

Between 2010 to 2015, the Expensive Energy Mandate will cost Montanans an additional $1.865 billion over conventional power, within a range of $1.102 billion and $2.886 billion.

By 2015 Montana will lose an average of 1,874 jobs, within a range of between 1,172 jobs under the low cost scenario and 2,893 jobs under the high cost scenario.

In 2015, the RPS mandate will reduce annual wages by an average of $520 per worker, within a range of between $325 per worker $803 per worker.

Due to higher home energy costs, in 2015, annual real disposable income will fall by $175 million, within a range of $109 million and $270 million.

OBAMA’S GREEN FICTION: “To reduce barriers to growth and investment, I’ve ordered a review of government regulations. When we find rules that put an unnecessary burden on businesses, we will fix them.”

ATP’S FACTS: Obama’s regulatory review includes loopholes allowing bureaucrats to exempt even the costliest regulations, and is nothing more than a do-nothing attempt to fool employers.

(The Wall Street Journal, ‘Obama’s Rule-Making Loophole,” Jan. 24, 2010)

“Among many others, the Environmental Protection Agency said in a statement that it was ‘confident’ it wouldn’t need to alter a single current or pending rule…

“Perhaps the EPA’s confidence owes to a little-noticed proviso in Mr. Obama’s order. When the agencies weigh costs and benefits, the order says, they should always consider ‘values that are difficult or impossible to quantify, including equity, human dignity, fairness, and distributive impacts.’

“Talk about economic elasticities. Equity and fairness can be defined to include more or less anything as a benefit. Under this calculus, a rule might pass Mr. Obama’s cost-benefit test if it imposes $999 billion in hard costs but supposedly results in a $1 trillion increase in human dignity, whatever that means in bureaucratic practice. Another rule could pass muster even if it reduces work and investment, as long as it also lessens income inequality…

“… The current EPA is a perfect case study. One of Administrator Lisa Jackson’s top priorities is ‘explicitly integrating environmental justice considerations into the fabric of the EPA’s process,’ as a July 2010 memo to all senior regulators put it.

“‘Environmental justice’ is the left-wing grievance movement that claims pollution has a disproportionate effect on minorities and the poor. Ms. Jackson’s memo introduced new regulatory guidance—that is, rules about how to make rules—so every EPA action has ‘a particular focus on disadvantaged or vulnerable groups.’

“Ms. Jackson wrote that a new goal for rulemaking, enforcement and permitting is to have ‘a measurable effect on environmental justice challenges.’ But these amorphous concepts are not measurable at all. According to this guidance, EPA must nonetheless consider them when estimating the ‘economic impacts of regulations,’ and even its scientific analysis should “encompass topics beyond just biology and chemistry.” So put on your lab coat and complete a randomized controlled experiment in politics.”

Obama to declare war tonight

Posted on by Donald Ferguson

Dear friend,

Barack Obama plans to issue a declaration of war tonight.

His army?

His radical activists in the federal bureucracy.

The enemy?

Big Green is leaning hard on the White House to use Tuesday’s State of the Union address to fight American Tradition Partnership’s efforts to rein get a recorded vote on the REINS Act, a bill that would block Obama’s scheme to have activists in the EPA bureaucracy begin imposing “carbon caps” on Americans.

“In two previous big speeches on Capitol Hill, President Barack Obama planted global warming and energy near the top of his agenda, prodding lawmakers to get moving despite reservations about the sour economy,” POLITICO reported Saturday.

Obama is expected to continue that radical trend by announcing Tuesday night he will use his power to block any attempt to limit the EPA’s unchecked authority.

“On the left, the president faces pressure to confront Republicans and the handful of moderate Democrats who want to strip the Environmental Protection Agency of its powers to regulate greenhouse gases and some conventional air pollutants,” reports POLITICO, referring to the REINS Act backed by American Tradition Partnership, which would stop liberal activists in the federal bureaucracy from making up and enforcing their own laws.

And Big Green is planning to fight you and I with everything they have.  Get a load of this dangerous quote.

“‘The Clean Air Act is not in the Constitution but ought to be treated with almost equal respect,” said Rep. Jay Inslee (D-Wash.), echoing the views of nearly two dozen green groups, including Greenpeace, the Sierra Club and the World Wildlife Fund, which wrote the president on Thursday, saying his speech ‘offers a perfect opportunity’ to back EPA.”

The absolute “shellacking” he admits he took on Election Day changed some of his rhetoric, but it hasn’t changed a single policy.

That’s why I need you to turn up the heat and tell Obama to drop the radical green agenda from his State of the Union address.

Call the White House right now at 202-456-1111.  Tell Obama to drop from the State of the Union any plans to block the REINS Act, and all other efforts to stop him from using the federal bureaucracy to make up his own laws.

ATP members like you are already burning up the White House phone lines, and pressure is bearing down on Obama to cut Big Green out of the State of the Union.

Obama has only two choices.  Agree with ATP members, and most Americans, and drop the radical green agenda from the address.  Or ignore ATP members, fight efforts to restore constitutional, accountable lawmaking, and make Americans even angrier at him.

Call the White House now at 202-456-1111.  Tell Obama Americans have rejected his radical green attack agenda, and it has no place in the State of the Union.

Donald Ferguson
Executive Director
American Tradition Partnership

P.S.  The media report Obama plans to issue a new declaration of war on Americans Tuesday night.  His State of the Union address is expected to include a threat to block any effort in Congress to get a recorded vote on our REINS Act, and any other efforts to stop liberal activists in the federal bureaucracy from making up and enforcing their own laws.

But American Tradition Partnership has been turning up the heat on Obama.  ATP members have been ringing the White House at 202-456-1111 making it clear to Obama he’d better drop any radical green demands from the address.

REINS Act introduced in the House

Posted on January 24, 2011 by Donald Ferguson

Dear loyal supporter,

Two centuries ago we rebelled against tyrants who believed laws should be created by unaccountable regal decress.
Now, faced with a liberal regime that imposes its will on Americans through regulatory decrees, we must fight this battle again.
Will you help me fight to take away the power of unelected tyrants to make up and impose their own laws on you?
As I told you at the beginning of the year, American Tradition Partnership is going to fight in this new Congress for a recorded vote on a new law stripping federal agencies of their unconstitutional powers to create and enforce their own regulations.
We have now fired the first shot.
The REINS Act has been introduced in the House.
Can I ask you to please call your House member at 202-224-3121 and ask them to co-sponsor H.R. 10 and push for a recorded vote on the bill?
I can’t stress enough how important it is to push for a recorded vote on the REINS Act.
In short, the REINS Act begins the process of restoring our elected lawmakers as the only body who can make laws.
How?  By stopping the practice of bureaucrats issuing their own major federal regulations by requiring all such rules to be voted on by both chambers of Congress and then signed into law by the president.
And it can’t be tacked on to some bill as an amendment in the middle of the night.  If politicians want to impose huge new rules on you, they can only do it by casting a vote on a stand-alone resolution.
Not only does the language of the law block Barack Obama’s attempt to have his radical activists in the bureaucracy dust off laws you and I blocked in Congress and begin enforcing them as federal regulations…
…the mere threat of having to cast a vote on the REINS Act will kill much of the Obama agenda.
You see, Americans are angrier than ever at the army of activists who infest the federal bureaucracy.
Fed up with the mountains of red tape pouring out of federal offices, overwhelming majorities of Americans support ATP’s REINS Act.
And if federal bureaucrats follow through on Obama’s threat to use the EPA to begin enforcing his own Cap and Tax rules, the tea is realy going to boil.
But the introduction of the REINS Act changes the equation.
People used to vent their anger at bureaucrats they had no power to elect or fire.
But now that ATP has thrown the REINS Act into the congressional hopper ANY AND ALL federal regulations dreamed up by Obama’s bureaucrats are now a congressional issue.
That means if you and I can push Congress to give us a recorded vote on the REINS Act, liberals in Congress are going to be burning up Obama’s phone lines demanding he cool it on his radical enviro agenda.
They don’t want the EPA or any other agency to do ANYTHING that would anger voters just before casting a vote on the REINS Act.
With the possibility of casting a recorded vote on the REINS Act dangling over Congress, activist bureaucrats are going to be threatened with budget cuts if they do anything to stir up voters.
That means Obama’s plan to dust off the Cap and Tax bill you and I defeated and stamping “new federal regulation” at the top is dead.
That means Obama’s plan to impose “carbon caps” on employers and punishing productive capitalists is dead.
That means Obama’s plan to invent new rules in the middle of the game to shut down jobs — like he did last week in West Virginia — is dead.
So please call your House member at 202-224-3121.  Ask them to co-sponsor H.R. 10, and to commit to seeking a recorded vote on it.
America was founded on the belief in governance through the consent of the governed, and that laws can only be made by fellow citizens accountable through the ballot box.
Liberals have declared war on that America, and their aggressive campaign of imposing radical rule through regulatory decree has become an all-out attack under Obama.
Help restore a constitutional America by supporting ATP in this battle for a recorded vote on the REINS Act.

Donald Ferguson
Executive Director
American Tradition Partnership

P.S.  Our REINS Act has been introduced in the House.  Now it’s up to you and me to push against Obama and Big Green to secure a recorded vote.

While the language of the bill strips the EPA and other federal bureaucrat activists of their unconstitutional power to make up their own laws, just pushing for a recorded vote will block much of Obama’s agenda.  The November elections have liberal politicians afraid, and they’re pressuring Obama and the EPA not to do anything that would force them to defend the unpopular agency.

So please call your congressman right now at 202-224-3121 and ask them to co-sponsor H.R. 10, the REINS Act.
