Penn. dumps destructive ‘green’ programs as job losses, utility bills skyrocket

Posted on August 31, 2011 by Donald Ferguson

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports:

(Excerpted) The Corbett administration is de-emphasizing renewable energy and energy conservation, eliminating programs created by previous Democratic and Republican administrations as it focuses on natural gas energy from booming Marcellus Shale.

Quietly but systematically, the administration has all but shut down the state Department of Environmental Protection’s Office of Energy and Technology Deployment — the state’s primary energy office — and removed directors and reassigned staff in the Office of Energy Management in the Department of General Services and the Governor’s Green Government Council.

It has also forbidden state executive agencies from signing contracts that support clean energy supply…

…The administration’s prohibition against sustainable and alternative energy purchases reverses a policy that by the beginning of this year, had the state buying 50 percent of its electricity from renewable sources, according to PennFuture, and made it “a national leader in the development of the clean energy economy.”…

…Pennsylvania is not the only state reassessing or reducing sustainable energy, energy conservation and renewables portfolio standards policy. Governors and legislators have voiced similar concerns in Connecticut, Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Oklahoma and Wisconsin, according to the Pew Research Center.

“Even Tom Corbett, who is still dedicated to the job-killing radical environmentalist agenda, silently admits ‘green jobs’ are a hoax and Expensive Energy Mandates kill jobs,” said American Tradition Partnership Executive Director Donald Ferguson.  “Even Democrat-controlled Pennsylvania can no longer suffer the crippling burden of the low-jobs, high-cost Gang Green agenda.”

Obama swings EPA club in latest assault on jobs, affordable energy

Posted on August 30, 2011 by Donald Ferguson

The Wall Street Journal‘s editorial board writes this morning:

(Excerpted)…The EPA is currently pushing an unprecedented rewrite of air-pollution rules in an attempt to shut down a large portion of the coal-fired power fleet. Though these regulations are among the most expensive in the agency’s history, none were demanded by the late Pelosi Congress. They’re all the result of purely bureaucratic discretion under the Clean Air Act, last revised in 1990.

As it happens, those 1990 amendments contain an overlooked proviso that would let Mr. Obama overrule EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson’s agenda. With an executive order, he could exempt all power plants “from compliance with any standard or limitation” for two years, or even longer using rolling two-year periods. All he has to declare is “that the technology to implement such standard is not available and that it is in the national security interests of the United States to do so.”

Both criteria are easily met. Most important, the EPA’s regulatory cascade is a clear and present danger to the reliability and stability of the U.S. power system and grid. The spree affects plants that provide 40% of U.S. baseload capacity in the U.S., and almost half of U.S. net generation. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, or FERC, which is charged with ensuring the integrity of the power supply, reported this month in a letter to the Senate that 81 gigawatts of generating capacity is “very likely” or “likely” to be subtracted by 2018 amid coal plant retirements and downgrades.

That’s about 8% of all U.S. generating capacity. Merely losing 56 gigawatts—a midrange scenario in line with FERC and industry estimates—is the equivalent of wiping out all power generation for Florida and Mississippi.

In practice, this will mean blackouts and rolling brownouts, as well as spiking rates for consumers. If a foreign power or terrorists wiped out 8% of U.S. capacity, such as through a cyber attack, it would rightly be considered an act of war. The EPA is in effect undermining the national security concept of “critical infrastructure”—assets essential to the functioning of society and the economy that Mr. Obama has an obligation to protect.

He would also be well within the law to declare that the EPA’s rules are technologically infeasible. Later this year, for example, the EPA will release regulations requiring utilities to further limit mercury and other hazardous pollutants. Full compliance will be required by 2015, merely 36 months after the final rule is public, and plants that can’t be upgraded in time will be required to shut down.

“Obama will not issue such an order because his stated goal is to ‘bankrupt’ the coal industry.  His avowed purpose, through this regulatory gut-punch and his “cap and tax” National Energy Tax scheme, is to eliminate affordable energy,” said American Tradition Partnership Executive Director Donald Ferguson.

“Radical environmentalists have repeatedly shouted their assertion the United States are too prosperous and too powerful, and eliminating our access to jobs and affordable energy is an act of social and environmental ‘justice.’  After decades of palling around with radical green leftists like Van Jones, Obama is pushing this EPA rule a the enforcement mechanism for his radical liberal agenda,” said Ferguson.

“Obama’s latest EPA assault is so radical and economically devastating even Nancy Pelosi didn’t want her name on it.  They’ve farmed this economic out to their nameless political assassins in the EPA bureaucracy.  This is precisely why we must have a recorded vote on the REINS Act.  The REINS Act requires any proposed federal regulation with an economic impact greater than $100 million to be openly voted upon by both houses of Congress and signed into law by the President.  Predictably, environmentalists are violently opposed this simple reform to restore clean, transparent rule-making,” said Ferguson.

Go here to chip in $10 to support American Tradition Partnership’s growing grassroots army, as we press for a recorded vote on the REINS Act to stop these regulatory assaults on prosperity and freedom.

Media, politicians hyping Hurricane Irene to push new economic restrictions

Posted on August 29, 2011 by Donald Ferguson

Dear ATP supporter,

“The scale of Hurricane Irene, which could cause more extensive damage along the Eastern Seaboard than any storm in decades, is reviving an old question: are hurricanes getting worse because of human-induced climate change?

That was The New York Times last Saturday morning, attempting to terrorize millions into what activists call “environmental compliance.”

Less than 24 hours later what was supposed to be a massive killer storm limped into New York as little more than a summer thunderstorm with high tides.

Much like the “man-made climate change” supposedly responsible for the hurricane, the windy rainfall proved to be more media spin than storm circulation.

But if we’ve learned anything from environmentalists over the last few decades, it’s this…

…Every single time environmentalists are proven to be liars, they simply double down and fight even harder to control your life and take away your children’s freedoms.

Just look at how global warming hoaxster Michael Mann and Al Gore have stepped up their attacks on American Tradition after our think tank affiliate sued to get his shady “research.”

Now they’re doing it with “Hurricane” Irene.

Even after their predictions of a carbon-dioxide fueled super hurricane fizzled when Irene sauntered up the East Coast as nothing more than windy rainfall, The New York Times continued to call it an “intense hurricane.”

Even as D.C. resident spend their Sunday mornings raking up leaves that fell from the trees after the “intense hurricane,” global warming alarmists are already filling up voice mailboxes on Capitol Hill, insisting lawmakers use the windy rainfall to slap new restrictions on jobs and economic growth.

The mainstream media, who in D.C. declared video of choppy waters and a wet marina deck to be “devastating footage,” are more than happy to help.

That means it’s up to you and I to stop their whirlwind of lies and hot air.

Go here to chip in $10 to support ATP’s media campaign to expose the hoaxes, lies and frauds that prop up the false front of environmentalism.

I need your help to beat back the media and political super storm Gang Green is conjuring up.

They don’t care they’ve been exposed as liars.

In fact, they’ve never cared.

When their scary fairy tales like “killer super Hurricane Irene” fall apart, they simply dump twice as much money into their offensive and steamroll the opposition.

Don’t let it happen again.

Go here to chip in $10 to support ATP’s media campaign to stop their shower of lies and whirlwind of fear.

With your support, we can expose the “man-made global warming” political hoax as nothing more than spin and hot air.

P.S.  Much like the “man-made global warming” political hoax, Hurricane Irene turned out to be nothing but hot air.  But that hasn’t stopped Gang Green from using the minor event to claim humans will be wiped out unless we power down the economy.

Go here to chip in $10 to support ATP’s media campaign to expose the hoaxes, lies and frauds that prop up the false front of environmentalism.  Your gift will help ATP stop their whirlwind of lies.

Obama cousin: ‘Green’ jobs are black hole that leave us in the red

Posted on August 26, 2011 by Donald Ferguson

Dr. Milton R. Wolf, a board-certified diagnostic radiologist, medical director and a cousin of President Obama’s, writing in The Washington TimesGo here to read the entire article.

[Excerpt] It wasn’t enough to preside over the first-ever downgrade of America’s credit rating. Now the Obama administration is downgrading America’s energy supply as well. “We’ll invest $15 billion a year over the next decade in renewable energy, creating five million new green jobs that pay well, can’t be outsourced and help end our dependence on foreign oil,” candidate Barack Obama promised in the fall of 2008. But why stop there? Why not claim that you can heal the planet – whatever that means – and control the ocean levels too? Oh yeah, he did.

Let’s start at the beginning. America’s energy policy should center around the obvious: supplying Americans with affordable and reliable energy. File that under D for “duh.” Instead, it has been hijacked by those with ulterior motives ranging from slaying the mythical man-made-global-warming monster to scoring political points against “Big Oil” to creating phony jobs programs. So, how well have President Obama’s “green jobs” initiatives fared?

The president recently toured Johnson Controls Inc., a Michigan company that received $300 million from “Obama’s stash” to create – drumroll, please – a whopping 150 jobs. Do the math: That’s $2 million per green job. And this is the company the White House chooses to showcase? Evergreen Solar, a Massachusetts company, also received stimulus money, but the White House that is “the most open and transparent in history” won’t say how much, only that Evergreen is “hoping to hire 90 to 100 people.” Instead, it declared bankruptcy and shipped 800 jobs overseas. Well, so much for green jobs…

…Mr. Obama’s Environmental Protection Agency is poised to stomp a few more necks. The EPA’s regulatory train wreck is a set of regulations that energy experts say will add $129 billion to Americans’ already high energy bills while threatening to dismantle one-fifth of the nation’s coal-mining capacity. Considering that coal provides almost half of America’s electricity, this could be devastating. State leaders are already warning their residents to brace for roaming blackouts if these regulations are enacted.

Boudreaux: Facts about oil prices, and Obama’s latest job-killing scheme

Posted on August 25, 2011 by Donald Ferguson

Dr. Donald J. Boudreaux, professor of economic at George Mason University, writes in today’s New York Post:

President Obama and his allies are rushing to boost their own popularity by painting “Big Oil” as the biggest villain since Snidely Whiplash…But oil companies don’t control the price of oil and never have.

That misunderstanding — or, in the case of politicians, feigned ignorance — led to the crippling of the energy industry in the 1970s. Now we see the Obama administration, high on populism and zealous to push alternative energy, itching to repeat those mistakes. Yet handcuffing the oil and gas industry will only push energy prices even higher.

The price of crude oil is set by impersonal factors. Global demand is rising thanks to an improving (if fragile) global economy — while global supply hasn’t been keeping up, thanks to artificial restrictions imposed by Western politicians. Supply has also been distrupted or threatened by uprisings in Yemen, Libya and Bahrain. And the dollar — the currency in which oil is priced — has been weak. Together, these factors recently pushed the price of a barrel of crude up to highs of more than 37 percent above a year ago…

…Honest analysts know these facts. But politicians ignore them in favor of sowing suspicion of the industry. The latest “solution” they offer is to reduce supposed tax-code “subsidies” to Big Oil.

In fact, the energy industry is hardly undertaxed: It pays an effective tax rate of 41.1 percent, compared with 26.5 percent for the rest of the S&P Industrials.

Families in ‘green’ states suffer while families in energy states find jobs

Posted on August 23, 2011 by Donald Ferguson

AOL Jobs News reports:

Energy-producing states have experienced unemployment levels well below those of other states in recent years, thanks in part to a boom in energy exploration that’s been driven by high oil prices…

…North Dakota, Alaska and Oklahoma, all substantial oil producers, along with West Virginia, known for its coal reserves and production, were among the top 10 job creators in the six months ending in June, according to the Gallup Job Creation Index.

North Dakota, which topped the list of 50 states and the District of Columbia, has seen an energy bonanza. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the Plains state boosted daily oil production 84 percent in the two years ending March 2011, the most recent data available.

“This is yet more proof the only thing so-called ‘green energy’ powers is unemployment and misery,” said American Tradition Partnership Executive Director. “Environmentalists’ call for higher priced, less efficient energy drives up the costs of producing goods and services, forcing employers to cut jobs in order to stay afloat.”

“Environmentalists honestly believe they must spread poverty in order to save the planet from mythical threats.”

Nine of the ten worst states for job creation are under Expensive Energy Mandates.  Expensive Energy Mandates are bail-out laws forcing a state’s consumers to buy ‘green’ energy against their will by mandating a specific percentage of a state’s electricity from so-called ‘renewable’ resources.

Failing “renewables” who shower green politicians with campaign contributions, like solar and wind, are included in the mandatory purchasing laws while more realistic renewables, like hydroelectric, are left out by green politicians who like how Expensive Energy Mandates create a political pipeline that converts consumers’ electricity bills into campaign contributions from “green” speculators.

Go here to chip in $10 to support American Tradition Partnership’s grassroots army as we fight to overturn job-killing, market-rigging Expensive Energy Mandates.
