Cap and Tax claims its first job
Popular 14-termer Alan Mollohan thrashed by W.V. Democrats over carbon tax support

WASHINGTON – Western Tradition Partnership urged legislators Tuesday evening to rethink their support of carbon taxes after Rep. Alan Mollohan (D-WV,) a 14-term incumbent who hadn’t faced a serious race in 18 years, was unceremoniously bounced from office Tuesday by Democrat primary voters angry with his early support of “cap and trade” legislation.

“Cap and tax has already killed one job in West Virginia and it hasn’t even passed yet,” said Donny Ferguson, WTP National Director of Media and Public Relations.  “West Virginians sent a clear message Tuesday.  Kill cap and tax immediately and instead pass pro-jobs, pro-energy legislation.”

Mollohan was trounced by state Sen. Mike Oliverio in a shocking upset (56 percent to 44 percent with 71 percent of precincts reporting.)  Mollohan was an early supporter of cap and tax, only voting against the bill at the last minute after intense opposition by his constituents.  Oliverio pounced on Mollohan’s support, telling Democrats the congressman couldn’t be trusted to protect their jobs.

“While Mollohan ultimately opposed the proposed limits on such greenhouse gases as carbon released by burning coal, Oliverio says it was too little, too late,” the liberal Huffington Post reported May 9.

WTP does not advocate the election or defeat of candidates.  The citizens’ group educates the public and lobbies legislators on issues of environmental extremism and promoting responsible development and management of land, water, and natural resources.
