Ferguson responds to Obama attack on ATP

In a statement Monday the White House harshly criticized the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling earlier in the day in American Tradition Partnership v. Bullock, which upheld ATP’s claim states cannot deny citizens free speech in defiance of the Court’s ruling in Citizens United v. FEC.  In the statement, President Obama referred to the Citizens United ruling as a “mistake”

ATP Executive Director Donald Ferguson offered this response to the President:

“Free speech and freedom of association are God-given rights protected by the First Amendment.  Politicians cannot strip citizens of their right to speak freely because politicians do not like their speech or the manner in which they associate.  A free country is one where citizens can speak however they choose without fear of prosecution, threats or intimidation.

“If Barack Obama feels a ‘fair’ election is one in which his opponents cannot speak he is free to run for office elsewhere.  I understand Venezuela may have an opening soon.
